The mission of the Cultural Arts Council Douglasville/Douglas County (CAC) has always been to nurture, guide, and stimulate participation in the arts in the community. Before the year ends, help the CAC provide cultural experiences for all of Douglas County. These programs positively impact the lives of young people by teaching sensitivity, critical thinking skills, and most importantly: preparing them for a diverse world. ARTSventures, exhibits, classes, and the Mosaic: Multicultural Festival provide a platform for self-expression and discovery. Donate to the CAC to help us bridge the gap!
Why is Culture Important?
The need for high-quality arts and culture programming continues to grow. In 2017, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), schools nationwide reported that 53% of their students represented people of color. As the world and classrooms become more diverse and interconnected, students must be exposed to arts and cultural lessons that differ from their own. Immersion in world cultures has the power to inspire students and strengthen their critical thinking and empathy skills. Through cultural experiences, students will be able to more strongly empathize and understand concepts or practices that they wouldn’t have otherwise been able to interact with.
The same NCES study shows that 93% of teachers agree that students should be exposed to global cultures in the classroom. Despite this, since 2008 arts and culture programs have consistently been the first to get the axe when budgets are cut. To continue to provide empowering cultural programs, schools must partner with community organizations like the Cultural Arts Council.
The CAC provides several cultural experiences, catered to all community members. Every month, the CAC partners with the Douglas County School System to bring one of the “ARTSventures” programs to schools. ARTSventures is a program where talented local and international artists are brought in to perform a curriculum-based presentation based on their artistic medium. The program has brought performances about Native American, Latin, Chinese, Celtic, and Afro-Brazilian cultures to schools across the county. The ARTSventures program teaches valuable lessons to students about culture, history, art, math, and even science. It empowers students to dig deeper into other cultures, care deeper on a global scale, and see the world as one interconnected place where their future is limitless.
