If you’re looking for a unique and one-of-a-kind gift that showcases the talent of a local artist, then head to the Pop Up Arts Shop at the Cultural Arts Council Douglasville/Douglas County (CAC). This month’s featured artist is Laura Smith, a self-taught painter who creates stunning oil paintings inspired by urban landscapes.
Meet Laura Smith!
Originally from Quincy, Massachusetts Smith has since moved to Carrollton, Georgia. Smith moved to Carrollton, Georgia in 1995 to pursue music studies at the University of West Georgia. Although she had no formal art training, Smith always enjoyed creative outlets. Smith discovered her passion for painting in 2017 after joining an acrylics group at her local recreation department. Smith quickly switched to oil paint and began painting urban landscapes from her travels and childhood home.
One of the hallmarks of Smith’s style is the strong light and shadow patterns. These often fall across abandoned buildings, alleyways, bridges, and street scenes. She enjoys tackling the perspectives, angles, and straight lines offered in the urban environment. Her work has been recognized by the National Oil & Acrylics Painters Society, the Booth Museum of Western Art’s Art Guild, and the Carrollton Artists Guild.
