Join us on this Saturday, November 10th at 10:30 am for our Family ARTSventures program: Chinese Dance and Lecture Demonstration, presented by Atlanta Chinese Dance Company at Douglas County Public Library. This FREE performance will enthrall all ages. During this 45 –minute performance, students will be introduced to a visual feast of colorful Chinese ribbons, fans, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, drums, and more, featuring live, costumed traditional Chinese dance performances interspersed with detailed historical and cultural background information as well as audience participation. It is a fun and memorable way to experience not only the beauty and splendor of the art of Chinese dance, but also China’s long history (over 5,000 years) and diverse culture (56 ethnic groups). This engaging and educational presentation will inspire audiences to take pride in their own cultural heritage and to gain an understanding and appreciation of one of the fastest growing minority groups in the US.
Family ARTSventures! is a program designed to introduce performing artists into the schools with curricula-based programs, followed by an appearance at a public event for children and adults alike to enjoy. Founded in 1991 by Hwee-Eng Y. Lee, the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company (ACDC) educates and entertains metro Atlanta and surrounding areas about Chinese history and culture through the art of Chinese dance. The company has enchanted Chinese and non-Chinese audiences alike through original full-evening Chinese dance productions as well as countless community outreach performances for schools, universities, libraries, senior centers, art festivals, international days, corporate events, military observation, Asian community events and much more. Most notable, ACDC helped showcase Atlanta to the world as performers in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic Games. For more than ten years, they performed the “Chinese variation” in John McFall’s version of the Atlanta Ballet’s The Nutcracker at the Fabulous Fox Theatre.
Funding to make “Family ARTSventures!” possible comes from the GreyStone Power Foundation, Georgia Council for the Arts, Douglas County Economic Development Authority and the Douglas County School System. The Dance and Lecture Demonstration by Atlanta Chinese Dance Company will be followed with a school performance on November 16th at New Manchester High School.
